Making it easier to get a third primary dose of the COVID-19 vaccine

People aged 12 years or older with an underlying health condition may not have a full immune response to the COVID-19 vaccination. They may therefore be offered a third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine to help reduce the risk of getting seriously ill. This is known as the third primary dose. This third primary dose is not the same as the booster dose.

The third primary dose is usually given at least eight weeks after the second dose, but a GP or hospital consultant may suggest a different interval where this is required because of ongoing or planned treatment.

Many people will have received a letter directly from the NHS advising that they may be eligible for a third primary dose. People who have not yet been contacted but think they are eligible should contact their doctor as soon as possible.
